PUTTBOX™ KEY 3 - MASTER SPEED CONTROL

Unlock Your True Putting Potential

KEY 3 - MASTER SPEED CONTROL

THE TRUTH ABOUT SPEED CONTROL

Most golfers miss putts because the ball is rolling too fast at the hole.

A putt that finishes 2-3 feet past the cup effectively shrinks the hole by:

50–70%

Even a perfectly read putt will lip out if it’s traveling too quickly to fall.

This is why Key #3 focuses on capture speed—the speed where the ball has enough energy to reach the cup, but not enough to eliminate its ability to drop.

The ideal target is the:
PuttBox Speed Window (where the hole plays full size)

Understanding this window – and learning to deliver the ball into it – is the foundation of elite speed control.

HOW TO TRAIN CAPTURE SPEED
(Using Your PuttBox™)

Your PuttBox™ gives you clear, honest feedback on every roll:

  • Large Hole = Your real target
  • Inside of Box = Capture Speed Window
  • Back Wall = Too fast

The simple rule:
If the ball enters the large hole and settles inside the box without touching the back wall, your speed was perfect.

If the ball:
❌ Hits the back wall
❌ Exits the small-hole side
…it was traveling too fast.

This is the physics of putting—clear, objective, and repeatable. And remember:
Your ability to control capture speed is heavily influenced by your follow-through (Key #2).

FOUNDATION DRILL #2

The PuttBox™ Speed Window Ladder

This is the core drill for building consistent, tournament-quality speed control.

Just like the Start Line Ladder in Key #1, this drill creates:

  • Measurable progression
    • Natural pressure
    • Repeatable success
    • Real confidence

HOW IT WORKS

Start at 3 feet and work your way back to 10 feet.

  1. Begin 3 feet from the large hole
  2. Roll putts that enter the hole and settle inside the box
  3. The ball must:
    • Enter the big hole
    • Stop inside the box
    • Avoid the back wall
  4. Make 3 successful putts at that distance
  5. Move back one foot

Repeat:
• 3 feet → make 3
• 4 feet → make 3
• 5 feet → make 3

If you miss? Start over.

Your challenge: Can you reach 10 feet?

THE CAPTURE SPEED PROGRESSION

Your objective never changes:

→ Enter the large hole → Stay inside the box → Avoid the back wall

This creates a simple, repeatable system for training speed.

STAGE 1 – 4 FEET
Your first checkpoint. A perfect roll:
• Enters the large hole
• Settles inside the box
• Avoids the back wall

Stops inside box → ✅ Correct capture speed
Hits back wall →❌ Too fast
Dies early →❌ Too soft

Master 4 feet before moving further back.

STAGE 2 – 6 FEET
Same objective. This distance begins to test the relationship between your tempo and follow-through.

STAGE 3 – 8 FEET
Same objective. Goal: 6 out of 10 successful capture-speed rolls.

STAGE 4 – 10 FEET
This is TOUR-level touch.
Perfect speed is a ball that enters the hole and settles quietly inside the box.

OPTIONAL — PURE ROLL TEST
Draw a line around your ball and roll it through the large hole:
• End-over-end → Pure strike
• Wobble → Off-center hit
• Hits back wall → Too fast

Quick. Honest. Incredibly useful.

WHY THIS DRILL WORKS

Speed Window Ladder

This develops:

  • Soft, controlled delivery
  • Predictable tempo
  • Balanced follow-through
  • Clean roll
  • Reliable touch
  • Speed discipline under pressure

This is the exact type of training great putters rely on.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
